Q. How many Career Firefighters does Union County have?

A. Union County has 9 Career Firefighters and 1 Fire Chief. The Firefighters work 24 hour shifts. There are three 24-hour shifts with 3 Firefighters on each shift. The Fire Chief work hours are: 8-4 Monday through Friday

 

Q. How many Volunteer Firefighters does Union County have?

A. The Union County Volunteer force changes from month to month, but averages about 90 Firefighters.

 

Q. How many Fire Stations does Union County have?

A. Union County currently has 12 fire stations strategically located throughout the county. For more Information Please go to  Stations.

 

Q. How much initial training foes each Firefighter have to have?

A. The career Firefighters must complete the following classes within the first year of employment:

  •     National Professional Qualification Firefighter I

  •     Emergency Medical Technician- Intermediate

  •     Interior Search and Rescue

  •     Structural Fire Control

  •     Rescue Specialist

  •     Pressurized Container

  •     Handling Flammable and Combustible Liquids

  •     Hazardous Materials

  •     Infection Control

  •     Auto Extrication

  •     Various other departmental classes

    The Volunteers must complete the following classes within the first year:

  •     Basic Firefighter Module I

  •     Structural Fire Control

  •     Hazardous Materials

  •     Infection Control

  •     Various other departmental classes

 

Q. How much continuous training does each Firefighter have to have?

A. Career Firefighters must have 120 hours of approved fire training per year and 36 hours of approved medical training each year to maintain Georgia Certification. Volunteer Firefighters must have 60 hours of approved fire training per year.

 

Q. What do Career Firefighters do between emergency calls?

A. Career Firefighters have an assortment of daily duties including, but not limited to:

  •     Checking emergency vehicles and equipment for any malfunctions

  •     Washing Emergency Vehicles

  •     Pre-fire Planning

  •     Reports

  •     Fire Inspections

  •     Fire Prevention Education

  •     Managing Inventory

  •     Hose Testing

  •     Hydrant Testing
